Chapter VI - Maximine… Or the girl, who didn’t believed in monsters anymore.

The young and sweet Maximine… With only 7 years old, she already endured a lot. Life showed no mercy of any kind for her. Her parents weren’t very rich but did ok on the merchant business; at least, that was what her 5 years older sister, Celine, used to tell her, she unfortunately doesn’t remember that golden age. Her mother died while giving birth to her, and her father withered down on a bottle of whisky every night…
Ever since she could recall/remember, he would come late at night, in a alcoholic stupor and beat to a pulp her older sister… every night she would pretend to be fast asleep, when he appeared at her doorstep, praying to god so he wouldn’t enter the bedroom.
He, like usually, would continue is dreadful walk to her sister bedroom and then, after beating the white and pure skin of Celine, he would let go a dreadful groaning, followed by a shameful silence…..
The days followed those events, would come, obliviously, like nothing ever happened the night before.
They only talked about that shameful secret one time. Her sister only replied, with a gentle life caring smile: ‘Ill protect you! Don’t worry!’
She and her sister spent their days cleaning, cooking and earning a few coins by doing some chores in the neighbourhood, basically surviving on charity these days, by night… they, especially Maximine, lived in sheer terror of the “monster”.
The chains of the chores they would endure well... but the ones that their father casted where too much of a burden to carry.
One wintery night, her father, like every day, came to her doorstep, and stop…
She fiercely started praying that he wouldn’t enter… but that night, god was deaf, covered his eyes, and walk away from Maximine.
Her father entered the bedroom…
Even with the sheets covering her completely, she could already smell the stench of cheap bourbon filling up the air drowning her senses… Step by step, he was coming closer, she felt that grinning smile of his… the same he would usually show when beating her sister… Another step… the stench was already unbearable… Another step… he made a noise with is tongue… the same as he usually did after a good meal… She started crying, prayed some more, her voice disappeared completely, only a whim come out of her mouth.
Prayed, every known prayer, over, and over, again. Faster and faster… they didn’t even made any sense now, so faster she was saying them.
Her heart racing against her chest suddenly stopped… so did her prayers.
She stopped praying… for a moment she felt stupid on praying to a god so cruel… on a heartless god that left her and her sister to that cruel fate. She felt anger, betrayed, left alone in a harsh violent world…
It was too late.
The monstrous paw of her father reached for the sheets covering her…
With the eyes closed, full of tears, she only mumbled one thing....
